Panther’s Mail: Issues with attachment management

Mail 1.3 introduces new features for handling email attachments. Unfortunately, it appears that these new features also introduce new bugs or problems.
First of all, in my experience the “Save All” button in the Attachments area in the message header is very unreliable. More often than not, when I try to handle attachments in that area (rather than in the actual body of the message, where they appear as well, as they used to in previous versions of Mail), I get an application crash.
The good news is that Panther now has a feedback feature that invites you to send a report to Apple right after an application crash has occurred. Hopefully many people will report the crashes with the attachments handling features and they will be fixed quickly in a Mail update.
The other, more insidious problem is that now Mail saves attachments as read-only files. I realize that this makes sense to a certain extent, but in most cases for me the attachments are files that I need to edit. So I would like them not to be read-only by default. Unfortunately, right now I have no choice but to manually change the permissions on the files after saving the attachments.
There should be a preference in Mail for saving attachments as read-only files or as read & write files.

OK, good to know :).

The attachment is read-only, when you drag it from Mail to your desktop. In my case when I do a Save All, it ends up being read/write.

I agree with you. This change is frusturating and makes using attachments in Mail 1.3 a bit annoying.
