My latest “Apple Peel” column is up at Applelust.com.
“Mac Blogging with mySQL and PHP: A Short Trip Through Unix Hell”
It pretty much explains what I have been up to in the past few days when it comes to maintaining this blog. It was definitely a learning
experience.

I read that column a few hours ago at the end of regular work, and I have very much been there. I am a programmer and server admin for a small liberal arts college in Oregon along with working part-time for pMachine. The amount of quirky behaviour exhibited by a server, database, language, or program is amazing. With hundreds of thousands of lines of code being involved, it sometimes seems like a miracle that any of them work properly together. Often getting into the guts of each system is the only way to make sure it work perfectly for you. Why do you think *nix geeks always have that look about them? :-)

Yeah, it’s what I have concluded… Unix geeks won’t be out of work any time soon. I too am sometimes amazed that it’s all running fine — but OTOH there’s something beautifully simple about the technology underlying a tool like pMachine. It’ll all plain text files with instructions, etc. It doesn’t look TOO hard… I only wish I had more time to learn all that stuff.
