That was, to put it simply, an appalling performance by the Gunners. I am afraid there’s not much more to say. It’s not like Arsenal didn’t know what to expect against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium. And it’s not like the Gunners were horribly under strength. There is the problem with the left-back position, of course, with both Cole and Clichy injured, but you cannot put all the blame on Cygan—although he did have a pretty dreadful game once again.

Gilberto has to be singled out as the lousiest performance of the day—he directly caused the second goal—and, of course, even though he actually had a few decent saves, Lehmann managed to let his temper get the better of him yet again. But really the whole team was poor. Bolton played their usual game, and got their usual result at home.

With the other results elsewhere, it is more or less the end of the season for Arsenal. The big concern now is whether they’ll be able to keep Arsène Wenger’s record intact and finish second. Based on today’s performance, they’ll be lucky if they qualify for the Champions’ League at all. It was a very disappointing day for Arsenal fans, and there were no excuses whatsoever.
