Word 2004: Table text formatting unpredictability

This kind of stuff drives me insane.
Take this simple table in Word:
As indicated in the picture, the first row of the table is selected. If I copy it, then place the cursor after the last row of the table and paste, I get this:
Fine. It’s what I expected.
Now take this table in Word:
Again, I copy the selected row, and then I place my cursor after the last row of the table and paste. And I get this:
Why?
In both cases, the last row contains text with formatting that’s different from the formatting of the selected row that I am trying to paste. In the first case, the text in the pasted row keeps its original formatting. In the second case, the text in the pasted row takes on the formatting of the text in the last row of the table.
Why? WHY? Why? WHY?
I am telling you, as soon as Pages becomes actually usable and I have time to configure it properly to my liking (with the appropriate templates and style sheets), I am putting Word in the trash — or rather keeping it only just in case I ever need it to open the occasional atrociously formatted document that Pages is unable to handle properly.
