Panther: New Finder window always points to home folder

In Panther, whenever I open a new Finder window (cmd-N), by default the focus is on my home folder in the sidebar. Even though I have set the “New Finder windows open:” setting to “Computer” in the Finder’s Preferences dialog box, new Finder windows still point to my home folder.

I suppose it must be a bug. (This particular Finder preference setting used to work fine in Jaguar.)

The preference setting works fine for me in Panther; setting it to “Computer” works no problem. Delete Finder prefs? Repair permissions? Not sure what you mean about “focus” though; I didn’t think it was possible for the Finder to focus on the sidebar. Arrow selections always move through the file listing for me, never through the sidebar.

You’re right, it must have been a corrupted Finder prefs file. I trashed it and restarted the Finder, and changed the setting again, and now it’s working fine.

Strangely enough, most of the preferences settings in Finder prefs were NOT forgotten after I trashed the com.apple.finder.plist file. Which seems to indicate that most of the settings are NOT stored in that file :).

But this particular setting was — and now it’s fixed. Thanks!
