What’s on your Dock

The recent O’Reilly article on Mac OS X’s Dock by Giles Turnbull is an interesting read. It is based on interviews with a number of high-profile Mac OS X users, including Brent Simmons, John Gruber, Adam Engst, and others.

Matt Jones at Frownland.com has more on the topic. I tend to agree with his view that the Dock is mostly newbie-friendly. Like Adam Engst, I have tons of items in my Login Items, and I have many applications running at any given time. That makes the Dock very messy, and it’s only because it cannot be easily turned off that I am still (reluctantly) using it. I also DragThing and LaunchBar, though. I am certainly glad that Mac OS X is customizable this way — but I am not particularly happy with the Dock, and the fact that it’s pretty much unavoidable.
