Comment Spam (continued)

I guess the things I implemented to try and combat comment spam didn’t work. This means that, for now, I have to turn the trackback feature off. It’s sad, but if this continues, I’ll have to turn it off permanently. At least regular comments require registration and that seems to help again spamming.
But as far as I can tell, there’s nothing to effectively prevent trackback spam. It’s totally idiotic, of course, because the trackback spam never actually gets through. (It has to be moderated first.) So the spamming never actually works for the spammers (the spam comments never appear on my blog), but they still do it, because it’s all automated, and they don’t really have any reason to give up trying.
Unfortunately, I can’t spend all my time deleting stuff in the moderation queue, and I don’t want to create problems with my host with constant spamming on my blog. So the trackback feature is off for now.

Well, you could always grant one of your readers with plenty of free time *cough* limited moderator privileges to delete it…

I am not sure I want to have a reader with “plenty of free time” working behind the scenes on my blog :). It’s really a small operation. Everything should be manageable by a single individual. It’s only because of this stupid trackback spam junk. I guess I am not the first one who has to turn trackback off. Ultimately, the trackback mechanism itself might have to be altered. It’s just too vulnerable.
