Rob Griffiths on Spotlight (finally)

The other day, I wrote a post about Spotlight the other day. In that post, among other things, I criticized Mac OS X Hints webmaster and Macworld columnist Rob Griffiths for having written about Spotlight’s performance problems without daring to express the outrage that the situation deserves. As a prominent Mac writer, I expected more scathing words from him. If Apple refuses to hear what an “ordinary” user such as myself has to say, then maybe we need more prominent writers to raise the tone of their reporting when appropriate.

In light of my criticism earlier, I should now point out that, since then, Rob Griffiths has actually posted an important column at Macword. The column, titled “A dim view of Spotlight,” is presented as an opinion piece, but it is in effect a comprehensive review of all that is wrong in the current implementation of Spotlight in Mac OS X 10.4.

It is a very good article, which recaps all the major problems with Spotlight, and provides a small number of key recommendations.

Now, whether Apple will listen and act on these recommendations remains to be seen. But at least Rob Griffiths has finally done what, in his position, he should have done a long time ago and clearly expressed what many Mac OS X users have been grumbling about since Tiger was released back in November 2004.

(One thing I still can’t get used to, however, is this stupid behaviour on the Macworld web site where every single web page is automatically reloaded every few minutes in your browser. I am the user. I am the one who decides whether and when I want to reload a page, for crying out loud. Bloody idiots.)

I was really surprised to see this.

The Mac press usually is so cheery that I’ve completely given up on them.
