Apple Store: Phone number fields not compatible with Safari

I find it somewhat ironic that Apple’s forms in the Apple Store are not compatible with Apple’s own auto-fill feature in Safari. Most web sites ask for phone numbers in a single field, where you enter the area code followed by your phone number (if you are in North America): XXX-XXX-XXXX.

The Apple Store, on the other hand, has a separate field for the area code. But then if you start filling out the form and the auto-fill feature is on in Safari, Safari starts adding the entire phone number (with area code) in both the area code field and the phone number field. Ouch.

If Safari can be smart enough to guess what is a phone number field in a form, you’d think it could be smart enough to detect when there is a separate field for the area code — especially when it’s on Apple’s own web site.
