Mac OS X: Pictures not centered when printing to HP cp1700

This is a problem that I have had ever since I bought my HP cp1700 color inkjet printer. When printing a picture from within Photoshop (or other Mac OS X applications), even though the “Print Preview” indicates that the picture will be centered on the page, it ends up being closer to the top than to the bottom.

I’ve tried all kinds of tricks to attempt to circumvent the problem — custom page sizes, printing from Preview, etc. — to no avail. I simply have no way of printing a picture without getting this problem with the top and bottom margins.

It’s quite annoying. And I can’t find a solution. There was a mention of a similar problem (with an Epson printer) on MacFixIt the other day, but the only workaround suggested was to choose “Legal” instead of “US Letter”. It’s obviously not an option for me when trying to center a picture on the page.
