Printing from Safari: font size problems

Ever since Safari hit the version 1.0 landmark, I’ve been experiencing printing issues that didn’t exist before with the beta versions. More specifically, for certain sites — but only certain sites — when I choose to print the page, the font size for the printed text is disproportionately big, for no apparent reason.
For example, if I go to a recent New Yorker story and click to display the supposedly “printer-friendly version“, if I try to print that printer-friendly version using the default settings, I get 20 pages with text in an abnormally large font size.
The only workaround I have found is to set the display font to be very, very small — to the point that it’s no longer legible on screen. Then the font size in the printed version is reasonable (but still a bit on the large side).
I never had that problem with beta versions of Safari. They seem to have implemented some kind of change. Since it only affects certain sites (but quite a few of them), I suspect a rather complex mechanism that cannot be easily worked out by the end user. I see no settings for print font size in Safari’s preferences, anyway.
Weird — and not very environmentally friendly!
