For some reason, the BBC decided to leave the words “Microsoft Word” out of the title of their article on the dangers posed by electronic files. Yet the article is very much about the dangers posed intrinsically by Microsoft Word’s document file format.

Without being overly paranoid about it, one should definitely think twice before sharing Word documents with others. This BBC story is an eloquent reminder. The article also says:

The UK government has now largely abandoned Microsoft Word for official documents and has turned to documents created using Adobe Acrobat which uses the Portable DATA Format (PDF).

Every time I receive a press release that is in Word format, I feel embarrassed for the sender.
