Pages ’09: Forgets formatting change after manual line break

Try the following:

  1. Open a new document in Pages ’09.
  2. Press command-I to switch to italics.
  3. Type a line of text in italics.
  4. Press command-I to switch back to roman.
  5. Type shift-Enter to insert a manual line break.
  6. Type some text.

The text should be in roman characters. It’s not. It’s back in italics, even though you switched back to roman before inserting the manual line break.

The same thing happens with bold text, and so on.

It is a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless, because you have to try and remember to insert the line break before switching back to roman. Otherwise your change won’t stick.

Obviously there is something wrong in the way Pages ’09 processes manual line breaks. I have already reported on another bug causing the insertion point (blinking cursor) to disappear when you insert a manual line break at the very end of the document.

It is possible that the two bugs are related.

Then again the bug also affects text formatting changes when you insert a manual page break with command-Enter, so maybe there is an even more general problem here.

In any case, it’s something that will need to be fixed, hopefully before the next major iWork version, which could still be a year away or more.
