Betalogue

This one is another one that has already been mentioned before on Betalogue, but it deserves an official induction.

All you have to do is install the latest version of MacLinkPlus Deluxe (or any previous Mac OS X-native version) and drag a file to its main window. Here’s what you get:

I think it’s fair to say that, as far as legibility is concerned, this is breaking some kind of record, even within the group of honourable Anti-Aliasing Hall of Shame inductees.

And it’s not like DataViz is not aware of the problem. A couple of years ago, I wrote a review of the product (version 14 at the time) and was actually able to discuss the issues with a DataViz staff member. He fully acknowledged the problem—but obvious, two years later, they still haven’t done anything about it.

The product has quite clearly been stagnant for the past few years, and it is just a clear that DataViz’s priorities lie elsewhere. It’s hard to tell whether we’ll ever see a version of MacLinkPlus Deluxe with proper font smoothing.
