I know most of this information is available in one form or another in various places on the web, but this is the first article I’ve seen that explains everything in a straightforward, user-friendly fashion and really enables you to get an automatic backup system set up in no time for a cost of 0 dollars.

Kudos to Richard Hough for putting together this excellent piece of Mac OS X advice. All you need is an external FireWire hard drive, a tiny little bit of familiarity with command-line stuff, Apple’s free iCal application — and you’re good to go.

The only thing that the article does not mention is that the backup process itself can be a bit taxing in terms of performance. So you won’t really want to run your backup script in the middle of the day while you’re working on your computer.

I leave my computer on through the night (because I am always downloading stuff and it takes a long time over my pokey dial-up connection), so I run the script at 2:00 am — and it works perfectly well.
