Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger): Wrong duration for MP3 files in Preview column

I don’t know why, but whenever I select an MP3 file in a Finder window in Columns view and the Finder displays the preview of the file, with the “Name,” “Kind,” “Size,” etc., it gets the “Duration” wrong each and every time.

As far as I can tell, the duration it displays in the Preview column is actually 3 times the duration of the file. For example, if I have an MP3 file that’s 04:09 long, the Preview column says “12’28.”

The file information window in the Finder contains the same error. In QuickTime Player and iTunes, on the other hand, the correct duration is displayed.

It’s a tad irritating, and I am wondering what I can do to remedy this. (The bug has already been reported to Apple.) Tiger doesn’t have the same problem with AIFF or M4A files, only with MP3 files.

PS: I tried repairing the disk with Disk Utility, which did fix a number of problems. But now the duration is no longer displayed in the Preview column or in the Get Information window. I just get “–” instead. Argh.

    What information does Spotlight have?

My impression was that not all durations are wrong in the Finder. But if they are, they’re equally wrong in Spotlight.

Yup, Spotlight is equally wrong. Tells me a 192.2-second song is 578 seconds.

Problem is, how do I fix this? :-)

No idea. I just observed that but don’t really care as iTunes handles my files just fine.

Why not suggest a bug report?

As I have said before, it goes without saying that the bugs I discuss here have been reported to Apple.

The ISO values are also reported wrongly by Spotlight for images with EXIF information. Applications report the value correctly, it’s the importer that’s broken.
