In Word 2004, Microsoft hasn’t fixed any of the problems in Word X regarding window management.

If you are in another application and want to close a Word document window without bringing Word to the foreground, you can’t — even if the document is in a saved state and Word doesn’t need user input (“Do you want to save the changes?” etc.) before closing the document. No, regardless of the document’s state, if you click on the Close box of a Word document window while in another application, Microsoft forces Mac OS X to switch to Word. Grrr.

Similarly, when you are already in Word, you still cannot hold down the Command key and drag a Word document window that’s in the background (in the background within Word, that is) without bringing it to the foreground. If you click on a background window’s title bar, regardless of whether the Command key is down or not, Word brings to the window to the foreground.

Obviously, when it comes to embracing core Mac OS X UI behaviours, Microsoft doesn’t care.
