Running Panther Server: 10.3.3 Combo Update fixes automatic login problem

A while ago, I reported on a problem I was experiencing on an Xserve with Panther Server 10.3.1. In spite of the fact that the option to automatically login as the admin user was checked in the System Preferences, after a restart the Xserve would refuse to automatically login, and would stop at the login window instead, requiring me to manually enter the login information. Not exactly convenient when the server is a 10-minute drive away!

Yesterday (which was a holiday here in Canada, and therefore an appropriate time for this), I had to install the Mac OS X Server 10.3.3 Combo Update on the Xserve, for unrelated reasons (more on this later). After doing a complete bootable backup of the Xserve startup volume on a second hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (you never know), I proceeded with the update, which worked just fine, and I restart the Xserve.

Much to my surprise, the automatic login worked!

In other words, the 10.3.3 Combo Update appears to have fixed the problem — at least for me. There is a discussion about it on Apple’s Panther Server Usage forum, and it seems that the update did not fix the problem for everyone… Someone also mentions that the update fixed the problem for a while, and then it stopped working again.

In other words, it’s all about crossing fingers now.
