Panther and Carbon application stability

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that, even since I’ve installed Panther on my machine, I have been experiencing weird stability problems with Carbon applications, in a very specific context.

For example, when launching Microsoft Word, whenever I try to anticipate on the launch process and hit the cmd-W shortcut (in order to close the blank window that Word opens automatically immediately after launching) before Word is fully launched, then Word unexpectedly quits.

If I wait until the launch process is complete and hit cmd-W then, no problem.

I would blame the problem on Microsoft, except that 1) the problem didn’t exist before Panther as far as I can recall, and 2) it seems to me that I have experienced similar problems in other Carbon applications, such as the Adobe applications and BBEdit. (I’ll try to keep track of this more closely.)

But I can definitely reproduce the problem quite reliably with Word X in Panther. Double-click on Word to launch it, and press cmd-W just before the launch process is complete (not too soon, otherwise the shortcut won’t register at all). In most cases, you’ll get an application crash.

I wonder if there is a more general issue in the Carbon environment in Panther that would explain this…
