Dave Hyatt on browser bugs

Safari developer Dave Hyatt writes about the “Reality of Bugs” in his blog, and has a number of valid points, including:

This is the reality of the Web. People are constantly shocked and amazed that their pet bug hasn’t been fixed in subsequent releases (e.g., in Mozilla or Safari), but those people simply don’t understand how many hundreds of thousands of bugs their particular problem is competing with.

At the same time, I can’t help but notice that Dave Hyatt’s own blog does not render properly in Safari if you change the font size, especially the calendar section on the right-hand side:

Surfin' Safari in Safari

Kind of embarrassing, isn’t it?

Congrats. You just made Dave’s case all over again. That rendering is NOT a bug in Safari — it’s a bug in the site (the sidebar thingy has a pixel width, so if the text size changes it WILL overflow).

So yes, it’s embarrassing in the sense that Dave’s web design and HTML coding skills may need improving… or maybe it’s just that he needs to spend more time focusing on his weblog… or then again, maybe he should be spending his time on something useful? ;)

I’m afraid you misunderstood my post. I didn’t blame the bad rendering on a bug in Safari. I just find that it’s embarrassing that someone whose main role is to fix bugs in an HTML-rendering engine and to optimize a browser to work around bad HTML is himself a source of bad HTML.

I don’t know how “useful” it would be to fix this particular problem. Maybe it would be useful when it comes to the public perception of Dave’s professionalism. I am certainly not implying that it’s on par with fixing bugs in Safari itself. But surely it wouldn’t take long for HIM to fix this particular flaw in his blog design.
