Panther: Input Menu flakiness fixed

Since I am a regular user of Spell Catcher X, I am all too aware of the problems that have plagued Mac OS X’s support for alternative “input methods” since the beginning. Even under the latest version of Jaguar (10.2.8) and with the latest version of Spell Catcher X (1.0.2) and even with the Jaguar Input Menu Fixer provided by the author of Spell Catcher X, I remained unable to get my computer to remember that it was set to use Spell Catcher as the input method after a machine restart. Each time I would restart my machine, Mac OS X would revert back to “Canadian CSA” (my keyboard layout) as the input method, and I would have to select the Spell Catcher X option manually in the Input Menu.

Well, as noted earlier, Panther introduces a number of changes in the way it handles input methods and the UI for the Input Menu. And, on the whole, now that I have been using for a few days, I can say that these changes appear to have been for the better.

In particular, Mac OS X no longer forgets that Spell Catcher is my preferred input method! Even if I shut down or restart my machine, the Spell Catcher input method remains selected, and Spell Catcher automatically launches during the startup process. Great!
