C|Net article on RSS “war”

The C|Net technology web site has a good article on the on-going “battle” between the existing Dave Winer-approved RSS syndication standard and the new syndication standard known as “Echo”, “Pie”, or other temporary code names.

I don’t know enough about the technology to really be able to discuss it. This blog is available as an XML feed based on the RSS 0.91 standard. It could also be made available as a feed based on RSS 1.0, or on RSS 2.0. I don’t know which is best. I don’t have time to research this. I’d like to be able to customize the feed a bit, to provide an alternative feed with the full text of my blog entries — but right now pMachine doesn’t provide such options unless you are willing to do some serious hacking.

What I do know is that, based on Dave Winer’s own blog entries, which I thought I should read when I first started my blog using his company’s Radio product, the guy has serious personality issues that get in the way of whatever message he’s trying to get across.

And if the stagnant and flawed Radio software itself is any indication of the quality of Dave Winer-approved technology, then I suspect that people have good technological reasons to be dissatisfied with the RSS standard.

That’s pretty much all that I can surmise as a Mac-using blog writer who had to switch from Radio to a server-based solution such as pMachine because of too many fundamental problems with Dave Winer’s product.
