Word X: No ruler in footnotes

The interface for footnotes and endnotes in Word X is utterly non-intuitive. (What else is new?) But one could get past the bad interface if things actually worked.

However, when in Normal view mode, if you choose to view your document’s footnotes/endnotes, they appear in a separate pane at the bottom of the screen. And, believe it or not, in that pane, no matter how many times you choose “Ruler” in the View menu, the ruler refuses to appear. So if you want to make adjustments to your paragraph formatting for footnotes, you are out of luck.

There is no workaround. Even if you switch to Page Layout view mode, put your cursor in the footnote area, and then choose “Ruler” in the View menu, the ruler still refuses to appear — whereas it appears without problems if your cursor is in the main text area.

If you want to adjust your paragraph formatting, you have no choice but to go through Word’s dialog boxes. Unbelievable.
