Word X: Deleting nothingness

I keep experiencing an utterly weird behaviour in Word X. When I use my predefined styles for bullet lists, which include a negative left indent, if I am at the very beginning of a line that is formatted in such a style, I frequently have to hit the DELETE key twice to in ORDER to get Word to DELETE the preceding paragraph mark and place the cursor at the end of the previous paragraph.

It is as if Word was deleting some kind of invisible character. The problem is that there is no such invisible character. In fact, it’s as if pressing the DELETE key once actually deleted the negative left indent itself — which makes absolutely no sense. Word cannot “delete” the negative indent. It’s not a character!

What an ugly beast this program is.
