Bush Press Conference: More of the same

Nothing new under the sun, then. Bush repeats that he “believes” that Saddam Hussein is a current threat to the US, yet fails to provide any convincing evidence of it either to the public or to a number of major players in the international community (France, Germany, China, and Russia, to name a few).
His point about the UN’s Security Council HAVING to carry out its resolutions and turn words INTO action is valid — yet there are countless UN resolutions that have yet to be implemented/enforced (Israel, anyone?).
Why is Resolution 1441 a priority? Because Bush says so. Why does Bush say so? Because he “believes” that Saddam Hussein is a clear and present threat to the US. Yet he is doing nothing to convince others that his “belief” is justified. He talks about links between the Iraqi regime and “al-Quaeda-type” terrorist groups, then corrects himself and says “al-Quaeda and others”. He’s clearly hesitant about this — yet wants us to believe him without asking questions.
Yes, Saddam Hussein is obviously not about to become a charming man and suddenly decide to comply with all UN resolutions regarding Iraq. But there are many other similar situations around the world. UN resolutions that remain mere “words” and have yet to be turned INTO action. Why Iraq? Why now? These fundamental questions are still unanswered.
And then there’s that smirk. I’m not talking about his smile when he jokes about the list of reporter questions being “scripted”. No, that’s fine. I’m talking about the little twitch of the mouth that creeps up recurrently while he’s being very serious and talking about very serious things. I don’t know if it’s an uncontrollable twitch or not. But it sure is scary.
