Disk Utility non-sense

I have just been experiencing major problems with my external FireWire drives. So once they were mounted again, I launched Disk Utility to verify and repair the disks if necessary.

The first time I launched Disk Utility, it immediately crashed, even before listing the volumes.

The second time, it launched OK. I then selected one of the external FireWire drives, which consists of 4 partitions (volumes). I clicked on “Repair Disk”. And here’s what it spit out:

Repairing disk for “System”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume System appears to be OK.

Repairing disk for “Other”
Mounting Disk(S,”Checking HFS Plus volume.”,0)
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Other appears to be OK.

Repairing disk for “Files”
Mounting Disk(S,”Checking HFS Plus volume.”,0)
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Files appears to be OK.

Repairing disk for “Dump”
Mounting Disk(S,”Checking HFS Plus volume.”,0)
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
Repairing volume.
The volume Dump was repaired successfully.

Repair attempted on 5 volumes
4 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired

How much sense does this make to you? First of all, it’s just scanned 4 volumes, not 5. Then one of them (“Dump”) was repaired successfully, but Disk Utility said that 1 volume could not be repaired. Of course, it might be the fifth one :).

Geez.
