Panther’s Mail: Messages losing their color

All is not rosy in Mail 1.3, of course. One annoying bug is that, if you have filters (rules) that change the text color of certain messages, the color changes when the messages first arrive. But then if you do something with the messages — i.e. reply to them, or forward them — the text tends to lose its color and revert to black.
You can select the messages and choose “Apply Rules” in the “Message” menu, but it’s annoying nonetheless — especially since reapplying your rules to your messages also replays all the sounds that are part of the actions triggered by your rules (something that “Apply Rules” didn’t do in previous versions of Mail, where it only changed the colors back).
Strangely, this bug doesn’t affect the messages’ background color (if it’s changed by a rule, it stays changed whatever you do to the messages).

Once you’ve disabled the rule in question, trying selecting the messages and using the “Apply Rules” command in the “Message” menu. Does it work?

I had exactly the opposite problem: a default rule in Mail applies a blue background to all mails coming from a certain apple.com domain. I tried to get rid of this color, but to no avail.
In previous versions of Mail, I could just disable the offending rule to make the background color revert to neutral. It seems that Apple has “optimized” the new version so rules do not get applied over and over again when you enable or disable them.

That’s strange… This particular rule does appear to have a buggy behavior. I just tried disabling it on my computer, and if I do “Apply Rules” after that, the background turns into a solid kind of blue that’s even darker! and without the round edges.
The only way to get rid of the problem entirely is to actually delete the rule. (It’s easy to recreate it: you just need a rule that checks if “From” is “apple_enews@applenews.lists.apple.com”.)
Once the rule is deleted, it no longer affects your mail’s color :).
Definitely buggy behavior for this one.

This was also my first idea, but unfortunately no, it did not work. (I just tried it again.)
There is one workaround: Modify the rule so that it sets the background color to white. I guess Mail will still draw the round marker, you just can’t see it anymore. An ugly workaround.
This should probaby be filed as a bug…
