Soul legend Mavis Staples’s new album titled You Are Not Alone is coming out on ANTI- Records on September 14. It’s produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco fame.

Here’s a great recording of Mavis and Jeff playing an acoustic version of the title song, on ANTI-’s YouTube channel:

“You Are Not Alone” (acoustic)

As a long-time Prince fan, I am of course more than familiar with Mavis Staples’s œuvre (and not just her Paisley Park period either). And I have also more recently become a big Wilco fan. (Their latest album titled Wilco (the album) is fantastic.)

So I think it’s great news that they have been working together. If the video above is any indication, it’s going to be another terrific Mavis Staples album, on par with her excellent collaboration with Ry Cooder on We’ll Never Turn Back.

I like Mavis’s output on Prince’s Paisley Park label—including the two albums Time Waits For No One and The Voice, sadly both out of print—but I think it’s a real shame that some of her best recordings with Prince, including the legendary studio outtake “God Is Alive,” remain unreleased to this day.

It feels like the prevalent circumstances at the time never allowed the collaboration between Prince and Mavis Staples to reach its full potential. I for one am delighted that she’s been able to continue recording with various people and still has the possibility to add to her already fantastic body of work. And I am very much looking forward to this new album with Jeff Tweedy. I am glad that, in spite of the apparently dire state of the recording industry as a whole, such music is still being made and being released.

The launch of Apple’s new Ping network via the iTunes Store poses some interesting questions.

If you’ve ever shopped at the iTunes Store, you might have noticed that there isn’t just a single iTunes Store for everyone in the world, but an iTunes Store for the US, another one for Canada, one for France, one for the U.K., etc.

And as soon as you register with a credit card, you are restricted to purchasing music from the iTunes Store for your own country. You can browse the virtual shelves of other iTunes Stores, but you are not allowed to buy anything from them. (You can use the “Change Country” link at the bottom of the iTunes Store home page to switch to the iTunes Store for another country.)

This has been a regular source of frustration for me, because I am an avid fan of various artists from different corners of the planet, and they often release singles and other special recordings that are only available through the iTunes Store of their country of origin.

For example, there have been Paul Weller releases that have only been available via the iTunes Store for the U.K., and there are Jean-Louis Murat releases that are only available via the iTunes Store for France.

As a Canadian customer with a Canadian credit card, I am not allowed to purchase those releases. These limitations are obviously due to contractual obligations/legal issues relating to the distribution rights negotiated by artists or their record labels.

Ping, on the other hand, is a new network for following artists and friends and their music. Is it going to have similar restrictions? As a Canadian iTunes Store customer, will I only be able to follow artists and people who register with the Canadian iTunes Store?

That would be quite absurd, and yet right now if I try to reach the Ping home page for the French iTunes Store, I am asked for my user name and password and then taken back to the home page for Canada. Ping is still a brand new thing and not very many artists have a presence on it today. So I cannot really verify whether I have access to the pages for the artists from France and the U.K. that I’d like to follow.

The picture might get a bit clearer in the weeks to come. But if one does end up being able to access the Ping pages of artists or people throughout the world, then the question will obviously be: will one be able to purchase the music that they have or recommend?

I cannot see Apple not wanting people to be able to purchase the music that is promoted through the Ping network. At the same time, we are still stuck with country-specific iTunes Stores after all these years. How is Apple going to reconcile these two realities?

An awesome excerpt from Prince's last concert at the O2 Arena in London available through his official web site.

If you live thousands of kilometres away from the U.K. and have been struggling to survive on a diet of grainy YouTube videos with scratchy sound, you simply owe it to yourself to put them all in the trash and visit the following page instead now:

http://www.3121.com/joy/

Even if you don’t have the bandwidth (the Flash movie is approximately 50 MB), even if you are only a casual Prince fan, even if you are not even a Prince fan, but simply a fan of music, you owe it to yourself to take the time to download and watch and listen to this.

The picture quality is not all that great, but the sound track is terrific, and the recording as a whole is simply awe-inspiring.

And yes, when Prince can release this kind of recording officially through his own web site, is it any wonder that he is irked by the profusion of cheap five-minute snippets of grainy video and horrible sound that YouTube lets its users post on its site in order to generate revenue?

Those YouTube users obviously do not see it that way and don’t see their own activities as harmful to Prince in any way. After all, they give him lots of additional free publicity… Yes, but Prince is not going after them. He’s going after the guys who profit from the whole situation. Maybe it is a hopeless battle. But the move raises a number of valid points, from YouTube’s own double standards with respect to music and pornography to the question of the long-term impact of low-quality recordings on the legacy of a modern-age artist.

What is for certain is that this video posted on 3121.com emphatically demonstrates the power of such recordings and very successfully conveys the pure excitement of seeing Prince play live. It’s obviously not as good as actually been there. But it’s the next best thing (and certainly the only alternative for millions of less fortunate music lovers) and we can only hope that there is much more to come from the same source.

(Of course, many long-term Prince fans would probably also raise the issue that Prince has been teasing us like this for years, with only glimpses of what he can actually do and of the vast amount of recorded stuff that he has been amassing over the years. That too is a valid point. But we are not the ones who have to deal with the politics and the economics of actually releasing the stuff. Does the current recording industry strike you as a very healthy place to be operating in right now? I guess we just have to be more patient… It can be frustrating, yes, and it can be tempting to succumb to the temptation of obtaining bootleg recordings. But at the very least, if you do succumb, do it in a way that does not allow any third-party to profit from it. In this digital age, it really is not that hard…)
