I don't have the option to view the raw source for drafts. It's greyed out.

1. Compose a message

2. Convert to plain text and save

3. Open the Drafts folder

4. Select the draft and view source.

You may end up with plain text once sent, but since you're editing in HTML mode, you'll see the "rich text features" you describe. It appears a "real" "plain text mode" for editing doesn't exist.

Eek.

Where do you see this, though? When I look at the raw source of a plain text message that I have composed and sent, there really is only plain text.

I am assuming that your code might correspond to the state of the "plain text" message while it is being composed, but I don't know how to see the raw code of a message while it is being composed. (The "Raw Source" option is not available.)

The easy, though surprising answer is that "plain text" is not really "plain text" but HTML with a "plain text" style:

a

This is a test.
