WW: I have written more about this bug since then:

<a href="http://www.betalogue.com/2006/08/30/mac-os-x-104-bug-with-colorsync-display-profiles-and-fast-user-switching-different-symptoms-and-a-fix-that-no-longer-works/" rel="nofollow">Mac OS X 10.4 bug with ColorSync display profiles and fast user switching: Different symptoms and a fix that no longer works?</a>

<a href="http://www.betalogue.com/2006/09/13/mac-os-x-104-bug-with-fast-user-switching-and-display-profiles-its-the-input-menu/" rel="nofollow">Mac OS X 10.4 bug with fast user switching and display profiles: It’s the input menu</a>

For me, the DMProxy workaround still works (with 10.4.10 on a Mac Pro).

There is another way to fix this issue courtesy of <a href="http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2006/02/fuscolor/index.php" title="Macworld Fix" rel="nofollow">Macworld</a>.

I haven't tried it on my PPC mini yet (with a washed-out screen after FUS), but on my MacBook (where I get a blue tint) the DMProxy program doesn't appear to be runnable by clicking. It's type is shown as "Document (Universal)" and it just loads in TextMate when I open it. I just created a hard link from the referenced location to the ~/bin folder. I suppose it helps if you are comfortable with the command line. :)

I actually got some feedback from an Apple engineer on this bug a while back (fall 2006), who said he was going to try to reproduce this bug reliably. It is apparently a bit of a challenge, because of the combination of things required (a number of menu extras on the right-hand side).

Still, I haven't heard from him in 10 months, and, as you said, the bug is still there… I too tend to think that, if they put more effort into this, they could reproduce and fix the bloody bug!

VERIFIED: 10.4.10 THIS ISSUE STILL STILL STILL EXISTS. Unbeleivable -- this was first uncovered in DETAIL in 2005... here we are 2 years later and i can replicate it to the letter on my G5 tower. HELLLOOOOO APPLE.... WE ARE WANTING TO USE FAST USER SWITCHING -- IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

apple: yes, it Is too much you fool. Buy an iphone and call your mother. Go masturbate to the thought that we have sold more ipods than there are people on the planet. Live it up and forget your problems with color sync profiles you design fag.

I hate to say it, but even in 10.4.<strong>10</strong>, this bug still exists. Good thing I only have one display, because this fix works great.

You're welcome :). I have a G4 MDD with stock video card, and I am affected too. But it could be that I use two displays — or it could be the (Apple) displays that I use. Who knows? This one is for Apple to figure out.

Yep, happens to me too. Really bad. Can't believe this one was missed! I mean really - no one testing fast user switching with two monitors?

Not just this, but I find that if I log out of a fast-user-switched account, then login to an active account, my firewire drive is unmounted.

Anyone with an external firewire drive see this as well?

Thank you!! I thought we were the only ones to experience this issue. I was hoping that 10.4.1 would address the issue. It affects a 20" iMac G4 Flat Panel, PowerBook G4 17", but does not seem to affect a Power Mac G4 Tower w/ MDD w/ stock video card. I love Tiger so far, but this bug is a show-stopper for a few of us. :(

Like I said, I definitely found this bug myself during testing and reported it a long time ago. The issue is not that no one tested it. It's about how seriously Apple takes the bug reports it receives. In this case, for a while they obviously thought it was all in my head and that everything was "expected". I had to insist that something was not right — and then the line went silent :-/.

Haven't seen any problems with FireWire disks, however — but I don't use fast user switching all that much myself, only for testing purposes.

With this and other bugs talked about here, other bugs in software around, I have the general feeling that software developers (of the major corps) are becoming more and more loose about bugs and feature request. This saddens me that quality control and customer satisfaction are falling behind and end up on a second rail.

Tr909: Either that, or software is becoming more and more complex and more and more difficult to test extensively. Or both :).
