Google: logging in and posting to newsgroups

I love Google as much as the next guy, but the company still has a thing or two to learn about basic web design.

I was reading a newsgroup post in Google Groups today and wanted to respond to it. So I clicked on the “Reply to this message” link at the bottom of the message, and… Google tells me that I am not logged in and asks me to log in first.

Fine. I log in using Safari’s autofill data, and the logging in works fine. But then Google takes me to a generic page for posting a new message to any newsgroup! Obviously, it’s not smart enough to remember what I asked it to do before it told me I had to log in first. Geez. Even your local newspaper’s web site is able to remember that and take you back to the page you wanted to visit.

So instead I had to reload the page with the message in question in Safari (using the History feature) and click on the “Reply to this message” link again. This time, Google did take me to the appropriate form for posting a reply to an existing post. Still…
