iTunes Music Store: Wrong character encoding in ‘New Music Tuesdays’ e-mails

Even though the iTunes Music Store is not yet available in Canada, I am subscribed to the store’s “New Music Tuesdays,” just so that I can keep an eye on what’s getting added to the store.

Since the iTMS is a Mac-first service and the mailing list is distributed by e-mail to Mac users running Mac OS X’s Mail, you’d think Apple would double-check to make sure character encoding works fine. Not so. Non-ASCII characters get butchered like it’s 1994 all over again. Here’s some feedback I sent to Apple on the topic:

The non-ASCII characters in your “New Music Tuesdays” emails are not encoded properly. For example, “Björk” becomes “Bjšrk”.

I am referring to the plain-text version. It’s in ISO-8859-1, but obviously some stuff gets lost here.

Come on, Apple, you can do better than this.
