Betalogue

The debate over the new version of FileMaker continues at MacInTouch.com in the reader report on the product. The last item posted (as of March 19) offers an interesting view that should be more encouraging to FM developers who are considering an upgrade.

Based on what reader Robert Cassidy says, the structural changes introduced in FM7 will take time to get used to, and we should probably reserve judgment until we’ve had a chance to fool around with the product:

Any conscientious developer should consider the range of solutions out there, but many of the improvements to FM7 are subtle in their implications and developers should take some time to do a full evaluation before casting judgment, as many traditional FM developers have failed to grasp what FM7 delivers.

In particular, the fact that the user interface and the data can now be separate is encouraging in that it might make it easier for developers to come up with interfaces that are more Mac OS X-friendly than what FileMaker currently has to offer. I guess we’ll see.

I am looking forward to my copy of FileMaker Developer 7, which is supposed to be on its way. I hope to be able to find some time to play with it in the near future.
