After kicking Arsenal out of the lowly Carling Cup (also known as the League Cup) in the semi-final last week, Middlesborough just did the Gunners a big favour by winning 3-2 at Old Trafford against Manchester United in what must have been a thrilling game.

Manchester United’s defensive frailties were made obvious in their last two games (2-3 at Southampton and 3-4 at Everton), but somehow they had still managed to bag all available points. Not this time. Middlesborough were leading 2-0 at the half, and when Manchester United got back on level terms in the second half, it looked as if the same scenario was going to be repeated all over again. But somehow Middlesborough managed to score a third one and to hold on to their lead. Phew!

Meanwhile, Chelsea didn’t have too much trouble beating Portsmouth 2-0. But since Arsenal also managed to win 2-0 yesterday against Southampton, in what appears to have been a difficult game, this means that the Gunners are 5 points clear at the top and 6 points ahead of Chelsea, with the same number of games played. It’s definitely a good position to be in as the Champions’ League is about to resume and the FA Cup challenge continues this week-end, with a high-profile Arsenal – Chelsea clash at Highbury. Exciting times ahead!
