EPL: Day 17, Part 1

Pretty miserable day in the English Premier League today, especially for Arsenal fans. The appalling weather conditions probably didn’t help, but both the Chelsea game at Fulham and the Arsenal game at Bolton were boring as hell. The difference is that Chelsea benefited from one flash of genius by Bridge and Crespo to take a lead that they kept until the end, while Arsenal were unable to express themselves against Bolton and to preserve the lead that they had established somewhat undeservedly through Pirès’ goal early in the second half.

The problem is also that Bolton plays a very unpretty kind of football, except for the occasional flash of brilliance by Okocha or Djorkaeff. They are a rather dirty, physical side, and that was obvious again today. In the corresponding feature last season, they managed to injure three of our players in the space of about 20 minutes. This time, fortunately, no one was hurt, but the game was similarly unpleasant to watch.

Oh well. Arsenal are still unbeaten, and that’s one record to cherish as we enter the holiday festivities. I hope that the next couple of games will feature more goals and more watchable football.
