Panther: Temporary freeze when mounting a CD or DVD

This is something new in Panther that I never used to experience in Jaguar. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD either in my internal SuperDrive or in my external FireWire CD-RW drive, at some point during the volume mounting process, the whole Mac OS X environment (except for the mouse pointer) freezes for a few seconds. Then the mouse pointer changes to the spinning pizza, and then the volume appears and normal operations are resumed.

As far as I can recall, mounting DVDs or CDs never used to cause this in Jaguar. The mounting process would take place in the background and not disrupt foreground operations at any stage.
