Candid talk from Arsène Wenger

A recent Yahoo! Sport article contains several surprisingly candid quotes from Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger, who analyses the club’s on-going difficulties in the Champions League, the lack of depth of the squad, etc. He also mentions Vieira’s recurring injury and the fact that playing him in mid-week was a mistake.

What I fail to understand, however, is how Arsenal’s club management can expect Wenger to make do with such limited funds for so long. I realize that the new stadium is an important long-term project, but there needs to be some kind of balance between long-term goals and more immediate concerns. When you compare this with the seemingly unlimited funding available at Chelsea, you have to wonder… Can Wenger really be expected to achieve anything durable this year without some financial help?
