It wasn’t a very interesting game to watch (and leave it to Canadian TV network Sportsnet to actually screw up their time schedule, which meant that I missed the first 20 minutes of the game, during which the only goal was scored), but there is no denying that this Canadian team has grown tremendously in terms of confidence and resilience in the past week or so. They were probably lucky to get ahead so early in the game, but they did well defending their lead for the rest of the game. The goalkeeper looks very confident, and that can only help.

Canada is probably fortunate to face Sweden in the semi-finals on Sunday, while the big clash will be in the other semi-final between the US and Germany, who beat Russia 7-1 in the other quarterfinal on Thursday. Germany looks like the favourite to win this competition (and they beat Canada comfortably 4-1 in the first round), but there might be a few surprises in store still.

The Canadian women’s team have certainly confirmed that they are a good team that can pose problems for the best opposition in the world. They have already accomplished their initial goal. Can they go on and achieve greatness? We’ll see on Sunday…
