Bernard Allison/Johnny Winter

I was going to write an item about how exciting a couple of tracks on Bernard Allison‘s latest album Storms of Life are — particularly track #6, entitled “Mean Town Blues”.

Then I looked at the liner notes, and realized that most of the stuff on the album was written by other artists :-). “Mean Town Blues”, for example, is a Johnny Winter track.

I knew nothing about Johnny Winter (I don’t know much about blues, period), so I started exploring… It turns out he’s been quite prolific, and it sounds like a lot of his stuff is quite exciting.

So now instead I’ve added Johnny Winter to my CD shopping list. Sorry Bernard :). I really like your version a lot, but I need to hear the original. I need to know how much of it is your creation, and how much of it is already there in the original.

This being said, regardless of who wrote which track, Bernard Allison’s album as a whole is a pretty good, enjoyable listen.
