Mac OS X: Monitor-specific font smoothing

I have a dual-monitor set up with two flat panel displays. (Yeah, I know, lucky me :).) The “Font smoothing” setting in my “General” preference pane in System Preferences is set to “Medium – best for Flat Panel”.

Yet on occasion, when I move a Word document window from the main monitor to the secondary monitor, I can clearly see the font smoothing change and become thinner. It doesn’t happen all the time.

I am thinking: the font smoothing setting is obviously tied to the type of monitor you are using. Why isn’t it a monitor-specific setting then? I am lucky enough to have two monitors of the same type. What happens when you have two different types of monitors, i.e. one flat panel and one CRT?

Clearly, the font smoothing setting should be part of the “Displays” preference pane, which is the only one that’s monitor-specific (i.e. there is one pane for each monitor).
